Happy World Read Aloud Day!

screenshot2019-02-01at5.49.09am

Today — February 1st, 2019 — is the 10th Annual World Read Aloud Day! But because reading aloud is worth celebrating for more than just one day, I’ve been celebrating all week, and will continue to celebrate next week, too! How? By virtually visiting classrooms and libraries all across the country (and also up in Canada!) and reading aloud to kids. All told, I’ll be visiting more than 60 schools!

You can — and SHOULD! — celebrate World Read Aloud Day, too. Just grab a friend, family member (pets included!), coworker, neighbor — or, hey, even a total stranger — and read them something. A picture book. A poem. Whatever! Why? Because reading aloud is fun, and it makes us smarter, stronger, kinder, and about a hundred other awesome things besides.

Happy reading!

~ Jarrett

Get to Know… Traci Sorell!

My name is… Traci Sorell. Actually, that’s my pen name. But it’s easier to pronounce and less to write than my entire last name!

I am a… Cherokee citizen, daughter, sister, niece, cousin, friend, first generation college graduate, traveler, former attorney, advocate, educator, wife, mother, and author.

As a kid, I… wondered about how the world works especially in the United States – why some grownups were in charge instead of others and why children and other vulnerable people had so few protections from those grownups.

Writing is… challenging, exhilarating, and what keeps me stretching myself to grow beyond my comfort zone.

Reading is… one of my lifelong loves. I would never trade the adventures, aching belly laughs, silent sobs, and wonder I’ve experienced through books.

Books are… powerful. They can uplift, harm, instruct and entertain. Those creating and publishing them need to be mindful of that always.

Did you know… that I only started writing for young people a few years ago? My debut nonfiction picture book, We Are Grateful: Otsaliheliga illustrated by Frané Lessac came out in 2018. My debut fiction picture book, At the Mountain’s Base illustrated by Weshoyot Alvitre, will be published in September 2019.  It’s never too late to pursue a different line of work—just be prepared to put in the time and effort!

Kids Need Books of All Kinds posters!

A lot of people expressed interest in purchasing poster-sized copies of my Kids Need Books of All Kinds illustration. Well, ask and you shall receive!

Thanks, all, for your interest and support!

Get to Know… Alison Goldberg!

My name is… Alison Goldberg

I am a… writer, blogger, parent, organizer, artist, and aspiring rock climber.

As a kid, I was… really into making things, whether art projects, neighborhood newspapers, or plays. Once my friend and I spent a whole weekend building papier-mâché chairs that were strong enough to use.

I still love making things. Last year, my daughter had a fourth grade assignment to work on a family project inspired by Kate DiCamillo’s The Tiger Rising. Our family got a little carried away, and our tiger grew to eight feet…

Writing is… so often about details. I like to write non-fiction and research-inspired fiction. I find that one specific detail about someone’s life or an animal or a historical fact can set a whole story in motion.

Reading is… immersive.

Books are… journeys, taking us to many worlds.

Did you know… the board book edition of I Love You for Miles and Miles will be on shelves soon! Here’s a photo of my picture book’s adorable new little sibling, releasing on December 31st!

Geeger the Robot!

Last week, I signed the piece of paper pictured below, and so am now finally, officially allowed to share some exciting news with all of you! My next series, GEEGER THE ROBOT, will launch in 2020 — Book 1 will be out in the spring, and Book 2 will be out in the summer.

These early chapter books feature Geeger — a kind, well-meaning bot with some not-so-school-friendly tendencies who nonetheless enrolls at an elementary school.

More info coming soon!

Kids Need Books of ALL Kinds

Last week, in a hotel room in New Jersey, I drew some books on a piece of scrap paper and posted it on Twitter and Instagram. I captioned it as follows:

Kids need happy books, sad books, silly books, serious books, laugh-out-loud books, spooky books, books about people who are like them, books about people who aren’t like them, tough books, breezy books, long books, short books, books full of pictures, books full of questions….

People expressed interest in sharing the image with their students, and even hanging it up in their classrooms or libraries. So I drew a neater version, with the sentiment behind the image included, in a way, along with the books themselves:

If you wish, you can now download a free, print-ready copy of your own at the ART section of my site. And if you print a copy and hang it up, please share! I’d love to see where my little doodle ends up. I’ve already gotten pictures of it hanging up in Maryland, Michigan, Virginia, Illinois, Missouri, and even over the northern border in Manitoba!

Activity Sheets — IN ACTION!

The activity sheets I posted a few days ago are already being put to use! All it takes is a little nudge — and kids’ imaginations go wild!

Screen Shot 2018-11-16 at 10.33.42 AM.png

And the sheets are being used in ways I couldn’t have ever imagined. Ms. Mercer in Decatur, Texas used them as part of her library’s Picture Book Month celebration. Seventh graders were tasked with making “mini picture books” based on the activity sheet prompts, which they then shared with younger, elementary school students.

Get to Know… Elissa Brent Weissman!

My name is… Elissa Brent Weissman. Brent is my middle name, not part of my last. And I pronounce Elissa like Melissa, minus the M.

I am a… curly-haired, glasses-wearing, city-dwelling author of nine books for middle grade readers. I’m also a teacher, a mom, a proud nerd, a retired table tennis player, and, for 30 minutes a week, a Thai-style kickboxer with a mean right hook.

As a kid, I was… frizzy-haired but glasses-free. I loved everything about school. I read and wrote like crazy, usually stories about school. I played the flute, was good at math, had five or more pen pals at a time, took tap dancing and acting classes, and I performed in shows, both at a community theater and in my basement. (As an adult, I no longer play the flute. I watch theater regularly but haven’t performed in a long time, not even in my basement. I’m down to one awesome pen pal. I’m still good at math.)

Writing is… an extension of thinking, only better. It’s a way give shape and meaning to all the weird, brilliant, fuzzy, unique, clever things inside your head. Best of all, you can take all the time you want to make it sound just right.

Reading is…. what made me want to become a writer myself. It’s also to thank for 99% of my writing ability, from where to put commas to how to structure a story to what makes a sentence sing. Reading is also an act of empathy that brings people together. Best of all, it’s relaxing and enjoyable.

Books are… the best. Sigh.

Did you know… there are four books in my Nerd Camp series? Two full-length novels (Nerd Camp and Nerd Camp 2.0) and two short novellas called Nerd Camp Briefs. I say this because lots of Nerd Camp fans don’t realize there are three more books they can read about the characters. And lots of kids who’ve read all four tell me that the most recent one, Amanda and the Battle of the Brainiacs, is the best one yet!

You can find me… at a coffee shop in Baltimore City, drinking tea and writing on my laptop. Or volunteering in my kids’ school library. Or maybe even in YOUR school library—I love visiting schools! Connect online at www.ebweissman.com, Facebook @elissabrentweissman, or Twitter @ebweissman.

. . .

Are you going to NCTE this weekend? So is Elissa! Check out her schedule below!

Activities!!!

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been working on some activity sheets — drawing and writing prompts to help ignite the imaginations and kickstart the creativity of kids (and, as always, kids-at-heart)!

I’ve planned to use these for a variety of things, but figured I might as well share them here, too, so YOU can share them directly with the kids in YOUR life. You can find the first batch of sheets at my brand-new “Activities” page, which you can link to using that nifty menu bar at the top of the page. I’ll be adding more sheets as I create them, so check back often, and please share completed sheets! I’d love to see kids’ creations! You can share with me on Twitter (@Jarrett_Lerner), Instagram (@jarrettlerner), or using the Contact form in that (still pretty nifty) menu bar above!
